OK I am looking at taking the plunge and renting a studio or industrial unit and starting up properly, I have set up a private limited company etc but when researching my competition I came across about 11 competitors on groupon.Co.uk doing portrait sessions for £12, no wait there, there including prints and one is including a canvas print....
That's not forgetting that groupon takes 50% of that £12..

Just how can I compete with that? It's ridiculous.

I have professional printing labs etc set up ready, payment merchants accounts and more set up ready to go but I can not see how anyone can compete with that sort of pricing it's just crazy.

This is one of the key reasons I decided not to take the path to professional photography but to keep it as a pleasure. The rate of return appears ridiculous, and with smart phone cameras improving all the time meaning everybody has a camera in their pocket I didn't think the future would be bright and roses but more likely to turn a pleasure into a dread.

I can only wish you the very best of luck with your venture!

see it this way also blow the image from a phone at a size 12x18 or much bigger.
wil you get the same image quality ? don't think so.
it is also to put a good portfolio so that the clients can see what you give them.

cheers Rene

The way I see it is that you pay for what you get and these people are doing mobile studio work and have been for many years.

I have sent out a survey over Facebook and people prefer a commercial studio over a home or mobile studio so I am going ahead with my plans, I can support myself for 12 months so I hope I at least break even...

Researching the Groupon photographers and they have been doing this for years... the price they charge doesn't even cover petrol never mind ink when they print them there selves then there's wear and tear on the equipment
